As part of our careers education, information and guidance programme we have scheduled “drop down” days where the normal school timetable is replaced by activities that relate to “preparation for future life”.
The emphasis of these days is careers and employers based with students undertaking a variety of different activities across each of the days throughout the year.
On these days we plan to give our students as much exposure as possible to employers, employees and working environments. In order to meet the statutory requirements outlined within the Gatsby benchmarks, every student must have at least one face to face contact with an employer or employee per year. Our programme is designed to make sure that several encounters are made over the course of the year and we feel this is a critical part of the engagement and success of these days.
Students can expect to take part in a wide ranging selection of experiences. These may include presentations by visiting guest speakers that come into the academy, special careers, offsite visits to local, regional or national locations. Other activities could include “hands on” workshops within the classroom settings of the academy or whole year group events based around a particular theme.
Not only do we encourage as much interaction between our students and the employers on Careers days, we also actively teach and emphasise the key employability skills that have been identified by employers and are required within the workplace. These are shown in the poster below and are a crucial part of a student’s future success in the world of work.
